Sensor size is the physical area of the camera surface that records light.
It is part of the explanation for framing and system trade-offs.
Different sensor sizes record different portions of a lens image. Full frame and APS-C are common formats; their size should not be confused with pixel count.
Compare the same focal length on two formats using the source field-of-view comparator.
Sensor size alone does not determine image quality. Lighting, lens, settings, sensor design and technique also matter.
Follow a connection to understand how these ideas fit together.
A smaller active sensor area records a narrower portion of the lens image.
Conditions: Focal length and camera position are unchanged.
The reference sensor format is needed to interpret a crop-factor comparison.
Translate lens framing between camera formats.
